"Good humoured presidents. EU-Commission President Romano Prodi and the then EU-Council President Bertie Ahern can be happy with the summit."

Picture Analysis
This photograph shows the then EU-Commission President Romano Prodi and the then EU Council Chairman Bertie Ahern. It was taken in Brussels during the EU-summit in March 2004 at which the heads of state and government of the member countries of the European Union agreed to prepare an EU-Constitution ready to be voted on at the June 2006 summit.

The photo of Ahern and Prodi makes clear the EU-European sphere of action through the name and title plates that can be seen on the picture as well as through the stars that are recognizable at the edge of the picture, and thus it does not actually need a written text to indicate the context.

The picture genre of informal portraits of EU politicians on which the subjects are shown joking with one another or behaving in a friendly and familiar way with one another occurs primarily in the environment of EU-summit meetings. For the most part relatively prominent male EU-politicians are shown in this type of picture. This type of illustration of EU-political players is what may be called a "European icon".
