Picture Analysis
The saying "United in diversity" is the motto of the European Union. It was introduced for the first time in the treaty on a constitution for Europe. Its Article I-8 lists the motto among the symbols of the EU, as it does for example the EU-flag or the EU-anthem, "Ode to Joy". The slogan was to be found as early as 2004 on the official post cards with which the European Commission welcomed the 10 new members into the EU. In the Gateway of the European Union (http://europa.eu), this European motto is characterized as follows: "The motto means that, via the EU, Europeans are united in working together for peace and prosperity, and that the many different cultures, traditions and languages in Europe are a positive asset for the continent."

The illustration presents the viewers with a colourful picture in comic-book style: Cheery youngsters dance in a circle around the European continent. This stylized map shows no political boundaries in EU-Europe: The inserted symbolism and the motto "United in diversity" point clearly to the fact that the European area is supposed to be EU-Europe: Instead of a sun, a Euro is shining - recognizable by the E-sign - and one sees the EU-flag. Notes of music point to the European anthem. Under the picture is the motto "United in diversity" in the 20 official languages of the EU.

This illustration represents a Europe-concept of hyphenated identities: The variability, the national identities of the European states enrich the European area, but they can be united under one common denominator - the European Union.
