Historical Truth Impossible? Nazi-Looted Schiele Paintings and the New York and Los Angeles Court Cases

Author / Editor:

Rathkolb, Oliver

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the recent debate on looted art in Austria, especially on the Schiele case, the confiscation of two Schiele paintings from the MOMA in New York 1998, and the Klimt case of Maria Altmann, the niece of Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. In this connection Oliver Rathkolb raises the following questions: Why is the looted art debate so strong and can collective memories be renegotiated by art restitution?
